Dental implants are considered the best solution to a missing tooth, providing the same level of function and aesthetic as a real tooth.

What Are Dental Implants?

dentist showing a tooth model of dental implantsDental implants are a cutting-edge solution in modern dentistry, offering a permanent way to replace missing teeth. Unlike standard dentures or bridges that only replace the crowns of missing teeth, dental implants are bionic tooth roots made from biocompatible titanium.

They are surgically placed directly into your jawbone, creating a secure foundation for replacement teeth that mimics natural tooth roots. This innovative approach not only restores your smile but also prevents the common issue of bone loss that can occur when tooth roots are missing.

Why Might I Need Dental Implants?

There are several reasons why you might consider dental implants:

Tooth Loss:

Tooth loss can result from various factors, including gum disease, tooth decay, accidents, or injuries.
Dental implants provide a permanent solution for replacing missing teeth, restoring both the function and aesthetics of your smile.

Preventing Bone Loss:

Without tooth roots to stimulate it, the jawbone can start to resorb or shrink over time.
Dental implants help prevent this bone loss, preserving the natural contours of your face and ensuring the stability of your new teeth.

What Are The Benefits Of Dental Implants?

Natural Look and Feel:

Implants look and feel like your natural teeth. They blend seamlessly with your existing teeth, providing a natural and confident smile.

Stability and Durability:

The titanium implants fuse with your jawbone, creating a stable and long-lasting foundation for your new teeth. With proper care, dental implants can last a lifetime.

Improved Functionality:

Improved Functionality: Implants restore full functionality to your mouth, allowing you to eat, speak, and laugh with confidence. There’s no worry about dentures slipping or discomfort.
Preventing Further Complications: Replacing missing teeth with dental implants helps maintain your overall dental and general health by preventing complications that can arise from tooth loss.

The Procedure

The dental implant process involves several key steps:

The Assessment:

During your initial consultation at Stoke Bishop Dental Centre, our experienced implant dentist, Dr Wilson will assess your suitability for treatment.
This includes evaluating your bone density to determine if any additional procedures, such as bone grafting, are necessary to rebuild your jawbone before implant placement.

The Treatment:

The placement of dental implants is a meticulously planned procedure, carried out by our skilled implant surgeon.
Depending on your unique case, some patients can have their permanent new teeth attached on the same day as implant placement, while others may require a healing period of a few months.

The Restoration Process:

Your dental implants and the new teeth attached to them will look and function just like natural teeth. You’ll be able to smile, laugh, eat, and speak with confidence, knowing your new smile is secure and reliable.
If you’re considering dental implants in Bristol, we’re here to provide honest assessments and expert guidance on the best solution for your unique needs.
Our commitment to your dental health and wellbeing is at the core of our practice.
For personalised guidance and to explore your dental implant options, schedule a consultation with Dr Wilson at Stoke Bishop Dental Centre today.
Unlike dentures, which are a removable treatment, dental implants are surgically inserted into the jawbone and become a permanent part of your body. They truly are one of the most significant and life-changing developments in modern dentistry to date.

Dental Implant FAQS

What to expect from single tooth dental implant treatment?

Once we have established that you have sufficient jawbone to go ahead with treatment, we can surgically place the implant into your jawbone, leaving it to fuse over a period of months.
Implants are made from titanium, a material that’s highly biocompatible with your body. After around 3- 6 months, we will invite you back to the practice to have your restoration (crown) fitted over the top, providing function and aesthetic to your implant.

What are the benefits of single tooth dental implant treatment?

Fixed solution to a missing tooth that protects the health of your jawbone. Dentures alone don’t have the ability to offer such protection.

Aesthetic result – your friends, colleagues and loved ones need not even know you have a dental implant!

Restores tooth function to 100%.

Care for your implant in the same way you would an existing tooth.

Dental implants can last a lifetime if properly cared for.

If you have multiple missing teeth, we can provide an extremely stable and functional solution, replacing a full arch of ten to twelve teeth by firmly securing them to just five or six implants.

It is also possible to have implant supported dentures and both these techniques help patients discover a renewed confidence.

Full arch implant cases can often be more complex but, rest assured, Dr Wilson has performed many multiple implant procedures with excellent, long-lasting results.

Implant Retained Dentures

Implant Retained Denture treatment leverages the stability offered by implants and uses between 2 and 6 strategically-placed implants to secure a whole arch of dentures in place.       Say goodbye to slipping and discomfort and hello to a natural-looking, secure smile.

What to expect from treatment

We will invite you to an initial consultation where we can assess your suitability for treatment. This involves identifying if you have enough bone to support dental implants. If this is not the case, we can look at providing you with a a bone graft. Moving forwards, we will take photographs and impressions, or digital scans of your teeth to create your dentures and surgically place the implants into your jawbone. Your implant will be left to fuse with your jawbone over a period of months and we will invite you back to have your dentures fitted securely over the top.

Converting existing dentures

If you already have dentures and would like us to adapt them, we can recommend an implant-supported lower denture to treat loose or painful dentures.

The benefits of Implant Retained Dentures

  • Have the ability to chew and enjoy a wider range of the foods you love without worrying that your dentures will become damaged.
  • Restore your confidence and wellbeing.
  • As the dentures are implant-supported, they’re firmly attached to your gums.
  • You will find that your ability to taste food improves, as there is less denture base present.
  • Cost-effective alternative to full arch of fixed implant teeth.
  • As they offer more stability, implant retained dentures result in a bite that is a closer match to your natural teeth.
  • As the dentures are supported by implants, you won’t be at risk of jawbone loss, which is an issue over time in the case of conventional dentures.

Are You a Candidate for Implant Retained Dentures?

During a consultation, we’ll evaluate your oral health and discuss whether implant retained dentures are the right solution for you. Most patients with good general and oral health are suitable candidates.

Recovering and Maintaining Your Oral Health

Post-Procedure Care

After the successful placement of your dental implants and the attachment of your custom dentures, there are some essential post-procedure care steps to follow:

  • Follow Our Care Instructions
    • Diet: We’ll recommend a soft diet initially to allow your implants to heal properly.
    • Oral Hygiene: Proper oral hygiene is crucial. You’ll receive instructions on how to clean your dentures and maintain your oral health.
    • Medications: If prescribed, make sure to take any medications as directed to manage discomfort and prevent infection.
  • Attend Follow-Up Appointments
Regular follow-up appointments are crucial for monitoring your progress and ensuring your implants are integrating correctly with your jawbone. These appointments also allow us to make any necessary adjustments to your dentures for optimal comfort and function.
  • Be Mindful of Healing Time
The healing process is essential for the long-term success of your implant retained dentures. While the initial recovery period varies from person to person, it typically takes a few months for the implants to fully integrate with your jawbone.

During this time:

  • Avoid strenuous physical activities that could put stress on your healing jawbone.
  • Stick to a soft diet as recommended to prevent any damage to the implants.
